Digital

Digital is transforming the global business enterprise including oil & gas, energy, chemicals, and industrials.  Companies in these sectors are using digital to develop new product and service offerings; improve the efficiency and efficacy of assets, supply chains, R&D and innovation, talent, safety and reliability, and organizational functions; and transform go-to-market, sales, marketing, and customer engagement.

Digital today represents a broad collection of technologies and capabilities to sense, monitor, and gather data; source and aggregate data from myriad sources; develop data visualization and analytics; inform artificial intelligence and machine learning models; and inform and implement decisions for both business functions and operational assets.  Further, digital technologies have spawned major advances across a number of inter-linked capabilities including mobile platforms, connectivity and 5G, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), digital twins, robotics, cloud and edge computing, augmented (AR) and virtual (VR) reality, and additive manufacturing.  Collectively, digital is enabling companies to gain insights at multiple timescales by deploying these capabilities at various stages from the edge to centralized systems.

Digital’s value proposition is conceptually compelling but its adoption, deployment, and value creation have been mixed across oil & gas, energy, chemical, and industrial companies.  Blaming oil & gas, energy, chemical companies as slow adopters of new technology is a common but lazy and inaccurate characterization.  In reality, there are a number of factors that have impacted digitalization in these markets including insufficient work in identifying the right applications and use cases, inadequate change management to address organizational inertia, turf battles between information (IT) and operational technology (OT) groups, and poor insight into hardware-software interactions.
